Family law: Divorce may stem from poor expectations

On Behalf of | Nov 6, 2019 | Family Law |

Reportedly, almost half of all divorces happened because the expectations of one or both parties were not met. However, these expectations can often be unrealistic. Here is a look at what types of unrealistic expectations often lead to family law proceedings in Texas and elsewhere.

Expectations in marriage are generally based on personal experiences, hopes or understanding. In other words, they are based on an individual’s understanding of the workings of the world.  However, although some people’s expectations are based on facts, others can be founded on misunderstandings, erroneous decisions or imperfect societal norms.

An example of an unrealistic expectation in marriage is that the spouses should complete each other. Some people believe that their spouses will always stay the same or that the spouses are responsible for making one another more evolved individuals. Yet another unrealistic expectation related to marriage is that if two spouses love one another, they will never have trouble resolving their disputes.

No matter what drives two people to get a divorce in Texas or elsewhere, the process can quickly take a toll both emotionally and financially. This is true no matter how short or long of a time the two have been married. However, an attorney can help a divorcing individual to tackle issues such as asset division and spousal support with the goal of attaining a comprehensive outcome that is in his or her best interests. The attorney will make sure that the client’s rights are protected during each step of the family law proceeding.
